11/29/2025 0 Comments PIAA football semifinal roundup: CEntral catholic returns to 6a title game, seton lasalle and peters township fall shortThe Pittsburgh Central Catholic football team opened up the season by testing itself against La Salle College at the Wolvarena. Thanks to a 32-14 win over Harrisburg in the PIAA Class 6A semifinals Saturday night, the Vikings will end their season against the Explorers, but at a different venue. Pittsburgh Central Catholic (12-1) hasn't lost since La Salle College handed them a 23-6 defeat in the season opener. The Explorers are led by Mizzou commit Gavin Sidwar at quarterback. This will be the third time that Central Catholic has reached the final since the PIAA expanded to six classes in 2016. The Vikings previously lost to St. Joseph's Prep in 2016 and 2024. Central Catholic has four state championship wins, including the first-ever Class 4A title in 1989. The Vikings last brought home the crown in 2015, when it knocked off Parkland, 21-18. Farrell rolls over Seton LaSalle The District 10 champion Steelers flexed their offensive muscles in a 40-19 win over Seton LaSalle. Farrell leaned on Juelz Johnson, who rushed for more than 200 yards. The Rebels (12-2) fell behind 24-0. Bishop McDevitt breaks Peters Township's heart Crusaders kicker Aidan Greall made a 24-yard field goal as time expired to help District 3 champion Bishop McDevitt beat Peters Township, 31-28. The Indians nearly had another wild comeback win. Peters Township trailed 14-0 and 21-10. The Indians took their only lead, 25-21, when quarterback Nolan DiLucia threw a 70-yard touchdown pass to P.J. Luke. Josh Rizzo is the editor and publisher of Pittsburgh Preps and Colleges. 9/26/2025 0 Comments WPIAL Week 5 Quick reactions: kiski area stays in playoff race, new castle upends aliquippa, central catholic smothers naALLEGHENY TWP - Kiski Area's football team wanted to out physical Franklin Regional Friday night. The Cavaliers didn't exactly outmuscle the Panthers, but were able to do enough to pick up their first Big East Conference win of the season.
Kiski's 14-7 win keeps the Cavaliers' playoff hopes alive. Franklin Regional (0-6, 0-3) is the only team that is likely out of contention for the playoffs. The Cavaliers opened up a three-game home stand with an important win. If Kiski wants to make the playoffs, the Cavaliers next two home games, against Latrobe and Armstrong will be vital. "Once Monday hits, every week is a season," Cavaliers coach Colyn Haugh said. "We forget about last season. It's not longer in our minds. We recharge the batteries, reset the engine and we are good to go." Kiski isn't healthy, as starting quarterback Landyn Armstrong didn't play against Franklin Regional. The Cavaliers also lost running back Ashton Taylor in the third quarter when he got his leg rolled up on. Lorenzo Price stepped in and played running back for Kiski to finish the game. "It's next man up," Haugh said. "The thing is that Lorenzo is the price who has been waiting in the weeds, waiting in the weeds and waiting in the weeds and it's been hard on him. To his credit, today he got his opportunity and he took advantage of it." New Castle shows its for real Marino Graham has the Red Hurricane trending toward contending for a WPIAL Class 4A crown. Graham ran for 105 yards and threw for 179 more to help New Castle beat Aliquippa 18-12 in its Parkway Conference opener. The Red Hurricane (5-1, 1-0) had mostly leaned on its defense to find success this season. The win over the Quips showcased some of that talent. New Castle has recorded its previous four victories by completing shutouts. Pittsburgh Central Catholic wins title rematch The Vikings are going to be hard to stop. Pittsburgh Central Catholic (5-1, 3-0) dominated North Allegheny with a strong defensive effort to record a 21-6 win. Roman Thompson scored a pair of touchdowns for the Vikings. Central Catholic beat North Allegheny in the 6A title game last season. The two teams have met in the 6A final in the previous three seasons, with the Tigers taking two of three. Pine-Richlands rolls past Fox Chapel, 63-3 This game isn't one that is worth mentioning because of its result. Pine-Richland coach Jon LeDonne shared a letter before the game that Fox Chapel Athletic Director Michael O'Brien had requested the two teams shorten the quarters of the game because of the wide gap in skill level between the two teams. The Rams won their meeting 71-0 this year. The response to O'Brien's request was strange, as the school faced criticism over taking this approach. This isn't a rare occurrence, as Butler did this in games against Central Catholic before leaving the WPIAL and going independent. I think the reaction to this has been overblown. There aren't enough large districts to have a large league.
North Allegheny and Central Catholic have met in the WPIAL Class 6A final in the previous three seasons, with the Tigers winning two of the three matchups. Central Catholic also won a meeting between the teams in the 2020 championship game. The Tigers (5-0, 2-0) will enter this weekend's home matchup as the underdogs. North Allegheny opened the season with a narrow win over Woodland Hills. The Tigers narrowly beat a strong Norwin team 20-17 last week. The Vikings (4-1, 2-0) opened the season by losing to a potential opponent in the PIAA final, La Salle College. Central Catholic had a tightly contested win over Pine-Richland in Week 1, shutting out the Rams in the second half of a 34-20 win. Central Catholic cruised since. The Vikings laid waste to Woodland Hills (58-20), Mt. Lebanon (57-0) and Hempfield (59-7) to stretch their winning streak to four. The Vikings have a balanced offense, led by quarterback Owen Herrick, who has 858 passing yards. Running back Roman Thompson has piled up 411 yards on the ground. Luke Rohan leads North Allegheny with 426 rushing yards. Brady Brinkley leads the Tigers with 708 passing yards. The question for North Allegheny in this matchup is if the Tigers can handle Central Catholic's large offensive line? Riverview, Greensburg Central Catholic seek separation Clairton and Leechburg have established themselves as the top two teams in the Eastern Conference. But the rest of the teams vying for spots in the WPIAL Class 1A playoffs still have hopes they can force their way into the playoff picture. Riverview (3-2, 1-1) blasted Springdale 64-14 last weekend to halt a two-game slide. The Raiders have struggled with consistency on offense this season. Riverview hasn't scored fewer than 18 points in a game this season, but has struggled with turnovers and penalties in key spots. The Centurions (3-2, 1-1) lost a nailbiter to Shady Side Academy in Week Zero and were blasted by a state-title contender, Clairton, two weeks ago. Samir Crosby has scored nine touchdowns for GCC this season. Crosby leads the team with 251 rushing and 225 receiving yards. New Castle will get a true test The Red Hurricane have flexed their defensive muscles all season. New Castle is off to a 4-1 start and has recorded four shutout victories. But the Red Hurricane will get the ultimate test this weekend during their Parkway Conference opener. New Castle will have to try and find a way to beat Aliquippa. The Quips rallied from a double-digit deficit to stun Penn Hills last Friday at Heinz Field. Marques Council passed for 309 yards last week, including a 28-yard touchdown pass to Raymond Williams as time expired. Council threw all three of his touchdown passes during the fourth quarter of Aliquippa's 21-16 win. Josh Rizzo is the editor and publisher of Pittsburgh Preps and Colleges. The Bears will have another opportunity to flex their defensive muscles this weekend against Shady Side Academy. The status of Bulldogs running back Maddox Harvey is unknown. He was helped off the field with a leg injury during the second quarter of a 30-point win over Burrell last week. The Bulldogs have plenty of weapons in the passing game to test Clairton’s stout defense. Sophomore quarterback Javon Johnston has a pair of capable targets in BJ Mallory and Cam Mallory. Cam Mallory committed to Youngstown State last week. Scoring against the Bears is a different challenge altogether. Clairton recorded 10 shutouts last season and held both their opponents under 20 so far this year. The Bears should win this one, but it is an interesting challenge for Shady Side Academy under first-year coach Andrew Geisler. Mon Valley battle set to determine top team in Class 4A Kemon Spell missed out on a high-profile matchup with Peters Township last Friday. The McKeesport star running back and Penn State recruit was out with an ankle injury. The Tigers’ offense wasn’t the same without him and several lineman, who were out with injuries. Will playing rival Thomas Jefferson reenergize the Tigers? The Jaguars swept McKeesport enroute to the WPIAL Class 4A crown last season. The regular season meeting a memorable one where Thomas Jefferson has to rally from a three-score deficit to grab a win. Tyler Eber has carried the Jaguars’ ground game this season, piling up more than 200 yards last season. This is a non-conference matchup, but should provide an insight to where both teams are at. Central Catholic and Woodland Hills head to Canton The Vikings and Wolverines will meet at the Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio. Dan Marino is the lone Pro Football Hall of Famer between the two schools, but both programs will enjoy getting a change of pace for a non-conference game. Woodland Hills is coming off a 41-7 win over Penn Hills. The Wolverines are hoping to build off the performance in Week Zero, where they only lost to North Allegheny by two points. Central Catholic has been more than battle tested already. The Vikings lost to the No. 1 ranked team in Class 6A, La Salle College, in Week Zero. Central Catholic then bounced back with a 34-20 win over Pine-Richland where the Vikings shut out the Rams in the second half. Roman Thompson scored three times for the Vikings last week. Where are your heads at? Plum opened the season with an impressive manhandling of Franklin Regional. The Mustangs, however, fell victim to their emotions. Plum and Franklin Regional got into a skirmish that saw players ejected on both sides. The Mustangs’ offense was excellent last week against Latrobe, but couldn’t close the game out in a loss to Latrobe. Gateway has been struggling to get on its feet. The Gators opened the season with a pair of 6A opponents -- State College and North Allegheny -- and lost handily both times. This is a non-conference game, but the Gators will be desperate to get on the board. Josh Rizzo is the editor and publisher of Pittsburgh Preps and Colleges. Farrell Stadium. Josh Rizzo/Pittsburgh Preps and Colleges FOX CHAPEL - A pair of sophomore quarterbacks made a strong impression during the Burrell and Shady Side Academy game Friday night at Michael J. Farrell Field. Buccaneers quarterback Antonio Perkins dazzled on the ground, while Javon Johnston had a strong overall performance during a 56-26 win by Shady Side Academy. Perkins, who transferred in from Valley, ran for 174 yards and scored four touchdowns. He also passed for 53 yards, including a 43-yard connection with Trey Coury. Shady Side Academy coach Andrew Geisler said the Bulldogs had to adjust to slow down Perkins' running. "Honestly, they did a tremendous job," Geisler said. "They exploited where we were a helmet short." Johnston threw four touchdown passes and ran for four more. Cam Mallory was Johnston's top target, finishing with 142 yards and two touchdowns. BJ Mallory also caught two touchdown passes and finished with 147 yards through the air. First-year Burrell coach Dom Girardi said it was hard to slow down Shady Side Academy's offense. The Bulldogs were a threat to score every time they touched the ball. "It's just that," Girardi said. "They have some great athletes. (BJ Mallory) is a real legitimate receiver threat. () is quick and shift. (Cam Mallory is phenomenal. It was a tough matchup for us." Burrell led briefly in the second quarter, 20-16, following a touchdown run by Johnston. The Buccaneers ended up giving the ball away on three possession with fumbles. Shady Side Academy converted all of them into touchdowns and led 38-20 at the half. "I think our mentality changed," Johnston said. "We doubted them in the beginning. Then we focused up and went from there. We got better and better." Girardi said Shady Side Academy wanted to pressure Johnston, but he was able to thwart their pressure. "Johnston throws a nice ball," Girardi said. "If we did get some pressure, he was able to make plays." The Bulldogs have started slow in consecutive games. Geisler said he would like to see that improve as the season rolls on. "We've been sluggish our first two games out," Geisler said. "It's something we need to break habit wise. They've risen to the occasion and they understand we are never out of the ball game." Central Catholic gets revenge on Pine-Richland There was some thought Pine-Richland may be the best team in the WPIAL regardless of class. But the Vikings got revenge on their northern rival Friday night. Central Catholic took the lead just before halftime on a 13-yard touchdown catch by Maceo Watkins from Owen Herrick. The Vikings never gave the lead back. Central Catholic benefitted from three touchdowns from Roman Thompson. The Rams (2-0) were shut out after halftime. There was no magic in McKeesport Kemon Spell let the news leak out Thursday night in a post that was quickly deleted off X. The Penn State recruit didn't play after suffering an ankle injury. McKeesport didn't fare well without its top running back, who is a junior. Peters Township's defense exploited the Tigers, handing McKeesport a 35-0 shutout defeat. Mars finds way to beat Bethel Park The Black Hawks offense steamrolled Seneca Valley in Week Zero, putting up more than 50 points in a win. Bethel Park came back down to Earth this Friday, allowing Mars running back Liam Corcoran to score on a 2-yard run with 15 seconds remaining in a 17-13 defeat. The Planets improved to 2-0. Josh Rizzo is the editor and publisher of Pittsburgh Preps and Colleges. The McKeesport star junior tailback piled up 292 yards on the ground and got into the end zone five times during a beatdown of Delaware Valley.
The Tigers, who figure to play a large role in the WPIAL Class 4A title picture, will welcome 5A contender Peters Township this Friday. The Indians also opened with a big win over Canon-McMillan. Nolan DiLucia led the Indians with three touchdown passes. Cole Neupaver ran for 109 yards for Peters Township. Peters Township beat McKeesport 42-7 last season at home. The Tigers are a proud program and will want to put on a better showing than they did last season. This should be a good contest. Vikings want to right their ship Central Catholic couldn't have opened with a tougher opponent than it did last week at the Wolvarena. The Vikings took on La Salle College, who has Mizzou commit Gavin Sidwar under center. Central Catholic, despite its massive size on the offensive line, couldn't get the ball moving against the Explorers. The Vikings only put up six points and will have another tough challenge against Pine-Richlands. The Rams are the defending Class 5A champions and are loaded with talent. Aaron "Oobi" Strader plays quarterback, while Florida State commit Jay Timmons and Penn State commit Khalil Taylor give him strong options in the passing game. The Rams will have to figure out how to handle Central Catholic's line, which includes Jimmy Kalis, Jon Sassic, Cole Bayer and James Halter. All of those players weight 270 pounds or more. Pine-Richland won the matchup, 22-17, last season. Deer Lakes looks for measuring stick The Lancers picked up what ended up being their most impressive win of the season during the meeting between the teams last season. Deer Lakes beat the eventual WPIAL Class 2A champions by 13 points on the road. The Lancers would start the season 6-0 for the first time in school history before finishing 8-3 and losing in the first round of the 3A playoffs. Deer Lakes (1-0) opened the season by smothering Keystone Oaks 23-7. South Park (1-0) knocked off East Allegheny, 33-26. Woodland Hills looks for second consecutive win over rival The Woodland Hills and Penn Hills game didn't finish last season after a shooting down the street forced a stoppage in the game with 10 minutes remaining. The Wolverines were on their way to a win with a 26-6 lead over their rivals in the "King of the Hills" rivalry game. The matchup this season is a meaningful one for both sides, despite not being a conference game. The Indians were shut out of for the first time in five seasons when they lost to New Castle, 12-0, in Week Zero. Woodland Hills gave North Allegheny all it could handle, but ended up losing to the Tigers 28-26 on a late touchdown. Scoop Smith and Ziggy Moore, who committed to Miami (Ohio) and N.C. State, respectively, both looked good in Week Zero. The Indians are hoping to get their offense moving in the right direction, as highly-touted receiver Carter Bonner provides Penn Hills with a strong target in the passing game. Josh Rizzo is the editor and publisher of Pittsburgh Preps and Colleges. Story ideas can be submitted to [email protected] or on X @J_oshRizzo. Clairton's football team appeared set to return to the WPIAL Class A summit last season. But the Bears had an injury to quarterback Jeffrey Thompson in the postseason. He wasn't able to throw the ball in the WPIAL Championship game, which played a key role in Clairton's loss to a talented Fort Cherry team.
The Bears will christen Tyler Boyd Stadium this Friday at 7 p.m. against Imani Christian. Clairton coach Wayne Wade said the new turf should make the Bears faster. Imani Christian, which also has its eyes set on WPIAL and PIAA gold, will be an excellent first test for both sides. The Saints won their first 11 games last season before falling to eventual WPIAL champion Avonworth in the Class 3A finals. Imani brings back plenty of Division I talent in junior defensive back Gabe Jenkins, who is a four-star recruit and defensive back. Senior athlete David Davis has committed to Penn State. Clairton, which finished 13-1 last season, shut out 10 of its 14 opponents last season. Sophomore linebacker Brandon Murphy has already drawn plenty of Division I interest. The Bears also return Thompson under center. Here's a look at a few other games worth keeping an eye on for Week Zero: Vikings Ready for Tough Test La Salle College is seen as one of the handful of teams with a chance to knock St. Joseph's Prep off its perch as the PIAA's top team in Class 6A. Pittsburgh Central Catholic would like to throw its hat in that ring. The Vikings reached the 6A final before falling to St. Joseph's Prep last season. The Vikings have plenty of beef returning up front. Matt Bowers, who is 6-foot-4 and 290 pounds, Jimmy Kalis (6-7, 280) and Jon Sassic (6-6, 280) will provide protection up front. The Vikings have won a state title since 2015 when they beat St. Joseph's Prep in a Class 4A game to claim their fourth crown. The Explorers turned heads last season by beating St. Joe's in the regular season. However, St. Joe's upended La Salle in the district playoffs. Explorers quarterback Gavin Sidwar will test Central Catholic's resolve. The Mizzou commit passed for 2,747 yards and 31 touchdowns last season. Jeannette, Mt. Pleasant ready for rematch The Jayhawks fought off a three-game slide toward the end of the regular season to reach the WPIAL Class A semifinals. Jeannette started last season with a bang. The Jayhawks erased a late deficit to stun Mt. Pleasant, 28-27, on a 74-yard touchdown catch by Jayce Powell with 3 minutes,15 seconds remaining. Jeanette will bring back quarterback Kymone Brown and running back Eli Jones. Mt. Pleasant saw its roster swell to 60 players and is hoping to make a splash in Class 3A. The Vikings saw a major exodus in the backfield. Quarterback Cole Chatfield graduated and the Vikings lost three players from the program. The two Westmoreland County rivals should produce another interesting contest. Can Gateway get its groove back? The Gators missed the playoffs last season, which was the first time in Don Holl's nine seasons leading the program. Gateway finished 3-7, but the Gators also were able to get freshman Elvis Koutsakis a year of experience under center. Koutsakis threw for 1,587 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Gators will hit the road to take on State College, which won District 6 and reached the PIAA Class 6A quarterfinals. The Little Lions are getting a boost this season as running back D'Ante Sheffey, who spent the last two seasons with Harrisburg returns to the program. Sheffey ran for 1,725 yards and scored 24 touchdowns as a freshman for the Little Lions. Josh Rizzo is the editor and publisher of Pittsburgh Preps and Colleges. Pittsburgh Central Catholic graduate Neal Shipley will take on the toughest challenge of his young career when he competes on the PGA Tour in 2026. Shipley, 24, is third on the points list on the Korn Ferry Tour. He has collected two wins on the Korn Ferry Tour.
Shipley won the LECOM Suncoast Classic last April. He also won The Ascendant in July. Shipley first turned heads in 2024 when he finished as the low amateur finisher in 2024 at both the Masters and the U.S. Open Shipley placed 24th in the U.S. Open as an amateur. However, Kelly, a Pittsburgh Central Catholic graduate, delivered with a key hit in the eighth inning to help West Virginia come-from-behind to beat Kentucky and advance to the Super Regionals.
Kelly, who was 0-for-4, stepped up to the plate and laced a single to shallow left-center field, cutting the Mountaineers' deficit to 12-10. West Virginia entered the eighth inning trailing 12-7. The Mountaineers plated six runs in the inning to steal the game. West Virginia trailed for a majority of the game. Logan Sauve hit a solo home run in the first inning to put West Virginia (44-14) ahead. Kentucky surged out to a 6-1 lead by the top of the fourth inning. The Mountaineers rallied with six runs in the bottom of that inning to go back ahead 7-6 when Sauve grounded out to the pitcher. This was the second consecutive year West Virginia won a regional crown. Josh Rizzo is the editor and publisher of Pittsburgh Preps and Colleges. |
